Just a not so ordinary day at the vet. For one, we don't really go to their clinic. Prior to this, they do home service to us. What a really horrible day to start with. Early this mornin' at around 9am, I carried with me a 12 day old rottweiler puppy. Her sibling was actually brought by my mom. We stormed the street as we headed to our vet's clinic 'coz the puppies were already due for the extraction of their puppy tails. For the past years that our female rottweiler bore pups, I really didn't have the chance to witness how their puppy tails had usually been cut off. My mom and dad usually takes care of this for we (me and my siblings) were usually at school by then. Thus, we would just arrive at home with the said procedure already done. But I guess, this time it's a different story.

Since dad had already passed, I had to actually take care of the usual duties and responsibilities he normaly had. And this is just a part of it. Yet another learning experience for me. My temperament apparently has this peculiar craving for adventure but this time, I'm really hesitant to be in the place where I would bear witness to how much pain the poor little pups would unfortunately and inevitably have theirselves in. I mean their puppies.. If equated to our life stage, their just babies.. Thus, this type of procedure that they have to undergo would definitely suck out all the puppy energy that they may have at the moment. Or much worse, if the procedure fails then any of them might not survive. They really badly need to recover from this. After the said procedure, it's really upto them to fight for their own lives.

As much as I awfully wanted not to get the extraction going, the vet suddenly signaled to start.. And from then on, I could not do anything but to cuddle and pat them to reassure them I'm by their side and that everything would just be fine. Moral support to be exact. Boosting my role as their surrogate mother! Haha! The procedure started with shaving off their puppy fur on the part of the tail where the cut has to be made. Then tying a rubber band on the part of the tail nearest to the butt to somehow numb the whole part.. This would serve as their anestisia. Thereafter, a small abbocath has been inserted just below the rubber band. With a blade, the cut has been started. That's when I heard them both yelped, screamed and groaned in excruciating pain. And that was the worst part of it. To hear every single agony and suffering they both have to go through and all you could do is just to pat them in empathy.

Surprisingly, the puppies didn't shed much blood contrary to what I was really expecting. Apparently, that's better than having them bleed much. It would just make them even weaker. So thank God for that, really! Earlier, I so thought their agonies would end as soon as their tails fall off yet I stand to be corrected. They still have to go through yet another painstaking phase. The stitching part. Gawd! It was really devastating to see a really large needle that is to be used to make stitches on the lacerated part. Frankly a true form of DOUBLE JEOPARDY! They both had to go through hell twice. What a life!

Finally the procedure is done. Now I'm nursing the pups. Not a career I've ever thought of or seen myself in yet it's the least thing I could do to help them recover and bounce back from such a tragic part of their lives.
